Government Moves To Replace Vessel After Kariba Death Toll Rises To 92

Kariba Boat Tragedy: Government Reveals Plan To Bring In Another Vessel

The Government is exploring ways to replace the vessel serving communities on Lake Kariba after the deadly boat tragedy, with the death toll now standing at 92. The latest figure was confirmed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Monday, 17 August 2026, after eight more bodies were recovered from the lake.

Government Seeks Another Vessel For Kariba Route

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said Government had engaged boat operators and private players in Kariba to find a way of putting another vessel on the route.

Speaking in Kariba on 17 August, Mhona said the private sector could play an important role in restoring the service while Government focuses on registration and safety requirements.

“Let’s put our heads together and as government we will play our part but also as private sector they have been doing this business, so they must come up with the solution.”

Mhona said Government would work to make registration easier while ensuring safety measures were strengthened.

Kariba Communities Await Boat Services

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo called for a vessel to be released for the route as soon as possible.

She said even a smaller boat could assist communities that rely on the lake for fishing and travelling between islands.

“Even if it’s a smaller boat, because you know it’s only 80km and it links the residents of rural or urban Kariba to their life, which is fishing.”

The Government has also announced a full investigation under the Inland Waters Shipping Act [Chapter 13:06]. The investigation will examine maritime safety standards, regulatory compliance and other contributing factors.
