Government has launched a formal investigation into the Mbuya Nehanda ferry disaster on Lake Kariba.
The RIDA-operated ferry capsized on 11 August 2026, leaving more than 90 people dead.
Meanwhile, authorities continue searching the lake for survivors, victims and other evidence.
Cabinet received an update during this week’s post-Cabinet media briefing.
Preliminary findings suggest the ferry carried around 180 passengers alongside various goods.
That figure reportedly exceeded the vessel’s approved carrying capacity.
Strong waves hit overloaded ferry
Minister of Women Affairs, Community and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Senator Monica Mutsvangwa provided details.
She said strong waves struck the ferry despite an earlier weather warning.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the Mbuya Nehanda ferry was ferrying about 180 passengers and goods, thus exceeding its carrying capacity. The vessel reportedly capsized after being struck by strong waves,” she said.
Authorities will now examine the vessel’s remains and investigate possible operational failures.
They will also assess whether officials followed relevant safety and compliance requirements.
“Government has commenced formal investigations which include examining the structural remains of the vessel and probing operational and compliance issues,” added Senator Mutsvangwa.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has since declared the tragedy a State of Disaster.
He invoked Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act while directing urgent assistance.
Affected families will receive funeral services, medical assistance and psychosocial support.
Search teams intensify recovery mission
Government has arranged State-assisted burials through Doves and Nyaradzo Funeral Services.
Meanwhile, several agencies continue working together to locate missing victims.
“The Department of Civil Protection continues to coordinate search, rescue and recovery operations in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Republic Police Sub Aqua Unit and the Zimbabwe National Army Boat Squadron, local authorities and relevant stakeholders,” she said.
The recovery mission has now expanded with additional aerial support.
A privately owned helicopter from the Matusadona Conservation Trust has joined the operation.
Authorities have also urged people around Lake Kariba to remain extremely vigilant.
Officials want residents and lake users to report floating bodies or debris immediately.
Such discoveries could provide crucial assistance as recovery teams continue their work.
Cabinet also received an update concerning Zimbabweans returning from South Africa.
The update covered ongoing repatriation and reintegration efforts for returning nationals.
