Lake Kariba Ferry Tragedy: 93 Dead As Police Release Names Of 39 More Victims

The search and identification process following the Lake Kariba boat tragedy has recorded another grim development, with the number of confirmed deaths now standing at 93.

Police said 39 more victims have been identified by their relatives, bringing the total number of positively identified victims to 83.

The latest figures were released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) at 11am on Tuesday, August 18.

Children Among Those Identified

The latest list highlights the devastating impact of the tragedy on families, with numerous children and infants among the victims.

The youngest person identified is one-month-old Tehillar Matembeka from Mola Village under Chief Mola in Siakobvu.

Other infants include seven-month-old Jesmine Nduna and five-month-old Bliss Simamba.

The list also includes several toddlers and young children, including two-year-olds Siadembe Richard Junior, Eken Kapandura, Liar Mutale, Ambila Msaka and Liandra Makanyaire.

Four-year-old victims include Lungulani Sianjema, Rodrick Siamatonga, Alvin Mazhomba and Wishmore Junior Charindapanze.

The 39 victims identified by their next of kin are:

Families Still Waiting For Answers

Despite the latest identifications, 10 victims remain unidentified.

The police said the identification exercise is continuing in collaboration with relevant authorities and the affected families.

Authorities are urging anyone whose relatives or close associates remain missing after the accident to seek assistance.

They can report to their nearest police station or visit the Command Centre in Kariba.

The continued identification process is expected to provide answers to families still waiting for confirmation about their loved ones.
