Parents In Mutare Urged To Act Fast As Respiratory Infections Rise
Mutare health authorities have issued a warning after the city recorded a rise in acute respiratory infections and flu-like illnesses, with children under five recording a particularly sharp increase in cases.
The warning was issued on 18 August 2026 as the Mutare City Health Department continued monitoring the situation through routine disease surveillance.
Mutare Parents Warned Over Respiratory Infections
Mutare City principal corporate communications and marketing officer Charles Sadondo urged residents to take precautions while avoiding unverified information.
He said residents should wash their hands regularly, cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing and keep rooms well ventilated.
“We urge the public to remain calm, avoid unverified information and take immediate steps to protect individual and community health.”
People experiencing flu-like symptoms were also urged to avoid close contact with vulnerable groups, including young children and elderly people.
Warning Signs Parents Should Not Ignore
Parents and caregivers have been urged to monitor young children closely.
According to the health department, immediate medical attention should be sought if a child develops difficulty breathing, fast breathing, chest indrawing, inability to drink or breastfeed, repeated vomiting or persistent high fever.
Sadondo also warned against using antibiotics to treat viral infections such as influenza without medical advice.
Residents were encouraged to wear masks when experiencing respiratory symptoms, particularly in crowded settings and healthcare facilities.
The city urged residents to remain vigilant as clinical assessments and monitoring continue.
