Spanish coach leads race for Warriors head coach job as club weighs permanent appointment

Ramón Catalá has emerged as the leading candidate for Zimbabwe’s vacant Warriors coaching position, Soccer24 understands.

The 65-year-old Spaniard holds a UEFA Pro Licence and brings extensive international coaching experience.

He has worked across fitness, technical development, assistant coaching and youth academy management.

Catalá brings extensive coaching experience

Catalá began his career in fitness coaching with several Spanish clubs.

His previous employers include Celta Vigo, Osasuna, Lleida, Salamanca, Real Zaragoza and Espanyol.

He later expanded his experience through international football assignments.

The Spaniard joined the technical teams of Nicaragua and Libya during his coaching career.

He also briefly managed Libya as interim head coach in 2022.

Furthermore, Catalá has worked in youth development at Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv.

His coaching journey has also taken him to Bulgaria, Qatar, Japan, China and Iraq.

That international exposure could strengthen his credentials for the Warriors role.

Strong competition for the Warriors job

Catalá faces competition from several experienced coaches as ZIFA searches for a permanent appointment.

Interim coach Kaitano Tembo remains among the candidates following his temporary promotion.

Tembo took charge after Marian Marinica resigned from the Warriors post in April.

Meanwhile, ZIFA has considered several other international coaching options.

Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet features among the names previously linked with the position.

German tactician Torsten Spittler has also attracted consideration from the football authorities.

Portugal’s Luis Goncalves remains another potential option for the Warriors.

Serbian coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojević was also considered during the search.

However, Sredojević has since accepted a position with Ethiopian Premier League giants Saint George SC.

For now, Catalá appears to have gained an advantage in the increasingly competitive race.

ZIFA could therefore move closer to appointing him as Marinica’s permanent successor.
