Pitso Mosimane or Poyet? Fresh Coach Emerges as SAFA Weighs Bafana Bafana Options

SAFA Enquires About Gustavo Poyet Despite Pitso Mosimane Leading Bafana Coaching Race

Pitso Mosimane’s expected return to the Bafana Bafana dugout has been given a fresh twist following reports linking another experienced coach to the position.

Mosimane remains widely regarded as the leading candidate to succeed Hugo Broos.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has reportedly received strong backing within the South African Football Association (SAFA) NEC.

Talks between the two parties were also previously described as being at an advanced stage.

Contract Talks Take Another Turn

According to Soccer Laduma, reports earlier suggested that Mosimane had rejected an initial offer believed to be worth about R5 million annually.

The three-time CAF Champions League-winning coach was subsequently linked to an improved proposal.

That development appeared to bring the two sides closer to an agreement.

An official announcement was then expected once the remaining details were settled.

However, the latest developments suggest SAFA may still be considering other candidates.

French Report Links Poyet to Bafana

French publication Onze Mondial has reported that SAFA has made inquiries about Gustavo Poyet.

The Uruguayan-Spanish coach, 58, has built an extensive managerial career across several countries.

Poyet has coached clubs including Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland, Real Betis and Bordeaux.

He has also worked with Shanghai Shenhua and AEK Athens.

At international level, Poyet previously managed Greece.

His experience has largely come at club level, with a more limited record in international management.

Pitso Mosimane Remains in Pole Position

Poyet’s reported emergence could add uncertainty to an appointment that had appeared increasingly straightforward.

However, indications from sources close to the situation suggest Mosimane remains ahead of the other candidates.

His previous experience with Bafana and his highly successful spell at Mamelodi Sundowns have strengthened his position.

Mosimane’s international experience also includes leading South Africa at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

For now, SAFA’s reported interest in Poyet appears to represent an alternative option rather than confirmation that Mosimane has fallen out of favour.

The coaching race could therefore be entering its final stages, with Mosimane still considered the frontrunner to take charge of Bafana Bafana.
