Lake Kariba Ferry Disaster Death Toll Rises To 95 As More Victims Are Named

The Lake Kariba ferry disaster death toll has risen to 95, with police naming 10 more victims and providing details of where they lived. The latest names include children from Kariba and Siakobvu, as well as victims from Chinhoyi and other areas.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said on 19 August 2026 that 93 of the 95 victims had now been identified by their next of kin. Two victims remain unidentified as recovery operations continue.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that 10 more victims had been identified.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police releases the names of 10 more victims, bringing the total number of victims identified by their next of kin to 93. The death toll has risen to 95,” Nyathi said.

The newly identified victims are:

  • Vimbai Magiri (36) — female adult, Zvamoyo Village, Chief Mola, Kariba.
  • Lina Mutale (6) — female juvenile, JSV Number 03, Padenga Holdings, Kariba.
  • Muchengati Siamavu (25) — female adult, Mujokeri Village, Chief Mola, Siakobvu.
  • Linah Siamandoga (8) — female juvenile, Siakanoka Village, Chief Mola, Siakobvu.
  • Princess Mberikwenyanga (23) — female adult, D30 Shabanie, Mahombekombe, Kariba.
  • Erina Machongwe (26) — female adult, 23272 Rusununguko Extension, Chinhoyi.
  • Felistus Nzerombairi (10) — female juvenile, 1172 Nyamhunga 2, Kariba.
  • Leeny Kasinahama (16) — female juvenile, Mola Primary School, Chief Mola, Siakobvu.
  • Yolanda Prisca Chipunza (9) — female juvenile, 220 Nyamhunga 1, Kariba.
  • Brace Shambo (2) — male juvenile, Siakanoka Village, Chief Mola, Siakobvu.

The latest police release shows that all 10 newly identified victims were female except for Brace Shambo, who was a two-year-old boy.

Two Victims Still Await Identification

Nyathi said two victims had yet to be identified.

“Two victims are yet to be identified and the Zimbabwe Republic Police continues to work closely with the affected families and relevant stakeholders in the ongoing identification and recovery efforts,” he said.

The recovery operation involves Civil Protection teams and specialised units working to locate missing people and recover additional bodies.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the accident a State of Disaster. Government has consequently mobilised support for affected families, including funeral services, medical assistance and psycho-social support.

Formal investigations into the circumstances surrounding the ferry disaster are also underway.
