Mutamba Warns Drug-Using Police Officers Over Their Jobs
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba has warned police officers taking drugs that they could face serious consequences if substance abuse affects their ability to perform their duties.
Mutamba made the warning on Thursday, 27 August 2026, while addressing officers at the Commissioner-General of Police 2026 Sports Gala in Harare.
Mutamba Warns Officers Taking Drugs
The police chief revealed that drug and substance abuse has also found its way into the police service.
He said some officers were reportedly struggling to perform their duties because of drug addiction.
“It is highly inappropriate and inconceivable to have peddlers and users in our midst,” Mutamba said.
He stressed that officers responsible for enforcing the law should not themselves be involved in drug use or associated with drug peddling.
“I am informed that some members are no longer able to perform their duties due to drug addiction. We cannot tolerate this as a law enforcement organisation,” he said.
“Decisive action must be taken and if it means chucking them out, let it be.”
The warning places officers whose drug use affects their work at risk of being removed from the force.
Police Chief Calls For Discipline
Mutamba also urged officers to embrace sport and healthy lifestyles, linking physical fitness to discipline, mental resilience and operational preparedness.
He said sporting activities could help officers manage stress while promoting wellness and personal development.
About 2,373 participants from across Zimbabwe took part in various sporting disciplines at the gala. These included athletics, football, volleyball, tennis, chess, squash and javelin.
Mutamba also warned drug dealers and peddlers that police remained focused on dismantling drug networks operating in the country.
His remarks come as authorities continue efforts to tackle drug and substance abuse, which has become a growing concern across communities.
