A Zimbabwean national has been arrested in Johannesburg following a police operation targeting alleged document fraud.
Police reportedly uncovered an operation linked to the production of South African smart identity cards. The investigation also involved allegedly forged financial documents.
The arrest happened in Hillbrow after police received information about the suspected operation.
Police uncover alleged identity document operation
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers received information on Wednesday, 9 September 2026.
The tip reportedly concerned a man allegedly recruiting clients seeking South African smart ID cards.
He was also accused of offering forged bank statements and payslips to prospective clients.
Police then verified the information before launching an operation within the Hillbrow policing precinct.
Officers subsequently searched the suspected operation’s premises.
During the search, police seized several items believed to be linked to the alleged document operation.
These included six South African smart identity cards and 22 blank smart cards.
Investigators also recovered a laptop and a smart card printing machine.
Suspect expected in court
The operation resulted in the arrest of a Zimbabwean national.
Police are now expected to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged document production operation.
The suspect is expected to appear before a court soon.
The arrest highlights ongoing police efforts to tackle fraudulent identity documents in Johannesburg.
Authorities will now present the case through the appropriate legal process.
