Top South African Police Officer Shadrack Sibiya Faces Rape Allegations After Night Out
A senior South African police officer is facing serious criminal charges after a court heard allegations that he took two young women to a nightclub, bought them alcohol and later allegedly raped an 18-year-old woman after she passed out.
Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, who was suspended from his position as South Africa’s deputy national police commissioner responsible for crime detection, appeared at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 22 September 2026.
He faces five charges, including rape, trafficking in persons and sexual grooming of a child.
What The State Alleges Happened
The State alleges that Sibiya arranged transport and accommodation for the two women before taking them to The Grand, a strip club in Sandton, Johannesburg.
He allegedly bought them food and alcohol before continuing to provide liquor at the Garden Court Hotel.
The charge sheet alleges that the 18-year-old later passed out.
“When the complainant had passed out the accused raped her and, on his way out of the hotel room he boasted to the complainant’s friends that she was very nice and still a virgin.”
Sibiya is also accused of sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl through WhatsApp between July and August 2026.
The State alleges that he sent her nude photographs and persuaded her to send sexually explicit videos.
Senior Police Officer Remains In Custody
Sibiya was arrested on Monday night and is being held at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria.
South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority said it would oppose bail, citing the seriousness of the allegations and concerns about possible threats to witnesses.
His bail hearing has been postponed to 29 September.
The allegations have not been tested in a trial, and Sibiya has not been convicted of any offence. His associate Lazarus Maumela has disputed the case, claiming the arrest is linked to internal succession battles within the South African police service.
The court proceedings will determine how the case progresses.
