Warriors’ Next Home Match To Be Played Behind Closed Doors After CAF Sanction
Zimbabwe will be without home supporters for its next international fixture after CAF imposed a stadium ban stemming from the chaotic events that followed the Warriors’ clash with DR Congo.
The decision comes after the 28 September 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the National Sports Stadium, where a spectator died and fans later invaded the pitch.
ZIFA has also been ordered to pay a fine as punishment for the incidents.

Tragedy At National Sports Stadium
The match was overshadowed by the death of a fan, turning what was supposed to be the return of the Warriors to the renovated stadium into a tragic occasion.
Tensions also spilled over after the final whistle when spectators breached security and made their way onto the field.
CAF’s Disciplinary Committee subsequently reviewed the incidents and handed Zimbabwe a closed-door punishment for its next home international.
ZIFA Fined By CAF
ZIFA has also been hit with a financial penalty as part of the disciplinary measures announced by CAF.
The sanction represents another setback for Zimbabwean football, particularly given the significance of the National Sports Stadium’s return to international use.
The venue had undergone extensive renovations and had not hosted a Warriors match since 2021 before the DR Congo qualifier.
Zimbabweans React
Zimbabwean football fans have reacted with frustration to the closed-door punishment, with some blaming supporters for costing the Warriors the advantage of playing in front of a home crowd. Others argued that the sanction was understandable given the incidents at the National Sports Stadium, while some used humour and sarcasm to criticise fans who entered the pitch. There were also calls for stricter security measures to prevent spectators from accessing the playing area, with supporters warning that the punishment would ultimately hurt the Warriors and genuine football fans.

@Sk Sk;
We wanted home advantage, but some supporters have handed it away. Passion is not an excuse for indiscipline. CAF has punished Zimbabwe, but the real losers are the Warriors and every genuine football fan.
