Mixed Reactions After St Mary’s High School Students Are Reportedly Delayed From Writing O-Level Exams Over Unpaid Fees

Parents Raise Emotional Abuse Concerns

According to H-Metro, the learners were reportedly allowed to begin their Mathematics examination nearly 10 minutes after it had started yesterday.

Some parents and guardians have also claimed that their children experienced emotional abuse ahead of their Mathematics and English examinations.

Headmaster Denies Claims

However, headmaster Bright Nyabako has denied that any students were delayed.

Nyabako acknowledged that some parents and guardians had not paid school fees for learners sitting for their O-Level examinations but disputed reports that the school had prevented candidates from writing their papers.

He said the school had communicated with parents about outstanding fees before the examinations began.

Incident Triggers Social Media Debate

The reported delay has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with some people arguing that parents should have paid school fees on time, particularly when registering their children for several examination subjects at a school where fees were outstanding. Others questioned the decision to allegedly delay learners, arguing that the lost examination time could not be recovered and that children should not be punished for their parents’ failure to pay. Some also suggested that schools could withhold results over unpaid fees rather than interfere with learners’ examinations, while others condemned the school’s actions and called for those responsible to be arrested.

Here are some of the comments;

@Jacob Sengai;

Ko kungobhadhara fees yacho nenguva ….. You are only focusing on the reaction but not on what triggered the reaction ! You prioritize to register 6 or more subjects uchiti mwana wacho anononyorera pachikoro paasina kubhadhara fees.

@Zviko Masomera;

MaHeadmaster are now becoming big headed. This is deliberate sabotage. You cannot do that to school children as if they are the ones responsible for paying fees. This is nonsense.

@Joseph Khumalo;

Arrest the school Authorities
