Impeached Busisiwe Mkhwebane bumps heads with current Public Protector Gcaleka

The conflict of having an impeached Public Protector interrogating her successor came home to roost in Parliament on Thursday, as the pair bumped heads over the running of that office.

Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka told the justice committee she thought it was inappropriate for Mkhwebane who’s now an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member of Parliament (MP) to grill her staff.

Gcaleka went as far as to accuse Mkhwebane’s husband, also an MP, of threatening the security of the chief executive officer of the office.

It comes a day after the North Gauteng High Court ruled in the Public Protector’s favour not to pay Mkhwebane a R10 million gratuity, a year after she was impeached by Parliament.

Never before has a former Public Protector had the opportunity to interrogate their successor’s annual report.

On Thursday, Mkhwebane sent a barrage of questions the way of her successor, many of which related to her time in office.

Gcaleka told the committee she thought this was unfair to her staff.

“This committee has a member who’s conflicted when it comes to the issues of the Public Protector, because she’s the impeached Public Protector and some of the matters she alluded to are matters that were ventilated in the Section 194 committee to which staff of the Public Protector had testified.”

“Chairperson, I don’t know why you allow her to just raise this nonsensical issue. So please, I’m a member of Parliament,” responded Mkhwebane.

Among her queries was why Gcaleka had not presented Parliament with a vision for the office as she had done as Public Protector.

Chairperson Xola Nqola shut down the exchange and appealed to Gcaleka not to raise matters relating to the Section 194 impeachment inquiry, of which he was also a part.
