A Bulawayo magistrate has permanently barred a truck driver from operating heavy vehicles after a drunk-driving crash damaged a parked car.
Tatenda Janasi, 33, appeared before the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court following the September incident. The court convicted him of driving without due care and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The case stemmed from a collision on 13 September 2026 along Nketa Drive, near Chicken Corner. Janasi was driving an Eicher Pro 1075 heavy vehicle when he hit a stationary Toyota Vitz.
The impact damaged the car’s right headlight and front fender. Fortunately, the collision did not cause any reported injuries.
Breath Test Reveals Dangerous Alcohol Level
However, the breath test exposed the seriousness of Janasi’s conduct. His alcohol concentration measured 344 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.
This reading exceeded Zimbabwe’s legal limit of 150 milligrams per 100 millilitres by more than double. The result highlighted the danger posed by driving a heavy vehicle after drinking.
Court Imposes Fine, Jail Term and Lifetime Ban
The magistrate imposed separate penalties for the two offences. Janasi received a US$130 fine for driving without due care.
He faces two months in prison if he fails to pay that fine. Meanwhile, the court sentenced him to 24 months’ imprisonment for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The court also prohibited Janasi from driving heavy motor vehicles for life. The ban carries significant consequences for his future employment as a truck driver.
The case serves as a warning about the serious consequences of drunk driving. It also highlights the risks alcohol-impaired drivers pose to other road users.
