Zimbabwe Goes Global: Eyes Seat On UN Security Council In Bold Diplomatic Coup

Zimbabwe Launches Bid For Seat On UN Security Council

Zimbabwe is making a bold diplomatic move to secure a seat on the powerful UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term. The bid has already received backing from both the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU). President Emmerson Mnangagwa will officially launch the campaign in Harare and at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York in September 2025.

A bid for global influence

The push for a seat comes as Zimbabwe seeks to reaffirm its commitment to international peace and security. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana stated:

“Zimbabwe’s bid is a reaffirmation of the country’s commitment to upholding international peace and security as well as the generation of international goodwill towards the country.”

The UN Security Council is one of the most powerful bodies in global diplomacy, with the authority to impose sanctions, authorise military action, and deploy peacekeeping missions.

Regional support and global ambitions

Zimbabwe’s bid has already gained key endorsements from regional blocs. The SADC and AU’s backing strengthens its chances, as the UN typically considers regional consensus when electing non-permanent members.

A seat on the Council would give Zimbabwe a platform to influence major global decisions. The country has previously been isolated due to sanctions, but this move signals a shift towards re-engagement with the international community.

What happens next?

The final decision will be made by a secret ballot at the UN General Assembly in 2026. Seats are decided by vote and require a two-thirds majority.

Elections for the 2027–2028 term will take place in 2026. Zimbabwe will compete against other African nations for one of the two seats allocated to the continent.

If successful, Zimbabwe’s term on the UN Security Council wouldld begin in January 2027.
