Johannesburg Water has scheduled a major supply interruption affecting residents in two parts of Cosmo City, Randburg, on Tuesday, 3 November.
The planned shutdown will affect Extensions 5 and 6, leaving households without running water for 12 hours. The utility announced the interruption in its water supply status update on 23 October.
Residents should prepare for the disruption, which will cover every street across both extensions. Johannesburg Water has placed the maintenance under Region C of its supply network.
When will water supplies be interrupted?
The shutdown will begin at 07:00 on Tuesday, 3 November, with restoration expected by 19:00.
Residents should fill clean containers before the interruption begins. This will provide water for drinking, preparing meals, washing and other essential household activities.
Families with young children, elderly residents or people requiring medical care should make additional arrangements. Meanwhile, households should avoid wasting stored water during the maintenance period.
Although Johannesburg Water expects to restore supplies by 19:00, water pressure might not return immediately. Some households could experience delays before receiving a normal supply, particularly those situated on higher ground.
Why the maintenance is necessary
Johannesburg Water will complete 24 tie-ins connecting newly installed 110mm pipelines to the existing 110mm water reticulation network.
The work will integrate the upgraded pipes into the existing system and prepare the infrastructure for commissioning. According to the utility, these improvements should strengthen the area’s water distribution network.
The project also aims to improve supply reliability, maintain better water pressure and reduce water losses. Furthermore, replacing ageing pipes should help minimise bursts and reduce ongoing maintenance requirements.
Johannesburg Water expects the upgrades to limit future disruptions and support more reliable service delivery. However, residents should remain prepared for the scheduled interruption while technicians complete the work.
Anyone experiencing supply problems during or after the maintenance can contact Johannesburg Water on 010 061 4470 or 086 056 2874.
