Pumula Man Jailed After Blowing Employer’s US$2,700 on Betting Spree

A Pumula man has been jailed after blowing his employer’s money on a betting spree.

29-year-old Nkenya Mudenda was sentenced to 24 months in prison—six of which were suspended—after stealing US$2,700 from his employer and losing it all on betting.

Appearing before Tredgold Magistrate Evia Matura, Nkenya Mudenda pleaded guilty to the charge of theft.

According to B-Metro, Nkenya Mudenda was employed by local food distributor Ansar Foods and had been tasked with collecting and managing funds between June 6 and June 9.

Prosecutor Nkanyezi Xaba told the court that Mudenda was entrusted to handle the money on behalf of the company.

However, instead of handing over the funds, he used them to gamble, believing he could win big and make a profit.

A Betting Risk That Didn’t Pay Off

When Ansar Foods director Mark Chitaka demanded the money, Mudenda had nothing to show. He eventually confessed, revealing he had placed all his bets in the hope of multiplying the cash.

“I just wanted to multiply the money. I thought I could make more through betting,” he reportedly said in court.

Unfortunately for him, the bets didn’t pay off. He lost every cent—and not a single dollar has been recovered.
