In a surprise turn of events, a fire broke out at the once-iconic Midlands Hotel in Gweru on Friday, 13 June 2025.

The incident quickly became a trending topic on social media after the State broadcaster, ZBC News, shared the news. Some users speculated that homeless people squatting near or inside the hotel may have accidentally started the fire. Others didn’t hold back on mocking the current state of the building, arguing that it no longer deserved to be called a “hotel” at all.
The criticism wasn’t new. Back in March 2023, Gweru’s Acting Town Clerk, Vakai Chikwekwe, named Midlands Hotel among 60 buildings in the CBD that were under threat of demolition if they weren’t renovated. At the time, many of these structures, including the Midlands Hotel, which is owned by Gweru Mayor Hamutendi Kombai, were said to be in a state of severe disrepair.
