ZRP Warns Drivers: Ignore Viral Traffic Fine Message
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned motorists to ignore a fake message that’s been circulating on social media, claiming drivers can now pay traffic fines online.
The message, which many received via WhatsApp and other platforms, looked official and even included a fake traffic ticket number, claiming the fine was due soon and could be settled online to avoid penalties.
But police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has set the record straight — it’s a scam.
ZRP Warns Drivers: Ignore Viral Traffic Fine Message
He said the ZRP has not introduced online payments for traffic fines and urged the public not to fall for the trick.
‘The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of a fake message circulating on social media platforms advising motorists or drivers to pay traffic violation fines online. This message is a scam and should be disregarded. The fake message reads: – “Reminder: Unpaid traffic ticket =- 174920433665 for CR2025 issued on 20250606 under Road Traffic Act, Fine: 101100 USD, Due by 20250620a Settle now to avoid late fees and penalties” The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to advise the public that this message is fake and not authorised or issued by the police,’ part of the statement reads.
All Fines Must Still Be Paid In Person
He reiterated that traffic fines in Zimbabwe are not paid online, and the official process still requires motorists to settle violations in person at designated police stations.
“Fines for traffic violations are currently being paid in person at prescribed police stations, as stated in previous Zimbabwe Republic Police press statements and official communication platforms. We urge members of the public not to fall victim to this scam and to be cautious of such fraudulent activities,” Nyathi said.
Police Launch Investigation into Scam
Commissioner Nyathi added that any future changes to the payment system, such as the introduction of online payments, would be formally announced via official ZRP platforms. In the meantime, police say they have launched an investigation to trace and arrest those responsible for the fake message.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will make official announcements on how online payment for traffic violations shall be conducted when it is ready. Investigations are currently underway to bring the perpetrators of this scam to book,” the statement reads.
