Near Mutare’s Odzi Siding, train operators discovered an unresponsive man lying across the tracks during their morning route. Despite repeated warning horn blasts, the individual showed no signs of movement. Railway officials suspect the victim may have already been deceased prior to the collision, as there was no visible reaction to the approaching locomotive.

“Our crew followed all emergency protocols when they spotted the motionless figure,” an NRZ representative stated. “Authorities are working to establish the man’s identity as no personal documents were found at the scene.”

In a separate morning accident, 45-year-old Peter Vengesayi from Village 1, Zeederburg, lost his life near Zvishavane station. The confirmed resident of Chief Mafala’s area was similarly found lying on active tracks when the collision occurred.
“The NRZ expresses profound sympathy to Mr. Vengesayi’s family and community,” the railway authority said in their official statement. “These preventable tragedies underscore the dangers of railway trespassing.”
Safety Warnings Reinforced
Railway officials have reminded the public of extreme caution near active tracks, emphasising that walking or resting on rail lines constitutes both criminal trespass and life-threatening behaviour. Investigations into both incidents continue as authorities work to determine the circumstances leading to the fatalities.
