Diogo Jota And Brother Killed In Lamborghini Crash In Spain
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a tragic car accident in Spain at the age of 28, just 10 days after marrying his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso. His younger brother, André Silva, 26, also lost his life in the crash.
The two brothers were travelling in a Lamborghini when the vehicle reportedly suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, Zamora, in the early hours of Thursday, 3 July 2025. The car rolled off the road and caught fire.
What caused the crash?
Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region were alerted shortly after midnight. According to early reports, the high-performance Lamborghini experienced a tyre burst while overtaking. The car left the carriageway, flipped, and erupted in flames.
“It was a severe incident. Fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene, but both occupants were declared dead at the site,” a regional emergency services spokesperson confirmed.
The stretch of the A-52 where the accident occurred is often used by travellers heading from northern Portugal towards Spanish ports and France.
Who was with Diogo Jota and what were they doing?
Jota was travelling with his brother André Silva, a 26-year-old footballer who played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second tier. The siblings had recently celebrated Jota’s wedding to long-term partner Rute Cardoso on 22 June in Porto.
Just hours before the crash, Jota shared a wedding video on Instagram, calling himself:
“The luckiest man alive to call you my wife.”
Rute posted wedding pictures the day before, writing, “My dream come true.” Jota replied in the comments:
“I’m the lucky one.”
The couple shared three children together. It is believed they were enjoying a post-wedding break in Spain.
How has the football world reacted?
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the deaths and issued a moving tribute:
“Far beyond being an exceptional player, Diogo was an extraordinary person… We have lost two champions. Their passing represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football.”
A minute of silence was scheduled ahead of Portugal’s Women’s Euros match against Spain on Thursday night.
Liverpool FC said in a brief statement:
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota… We request the privacy of Diogo and André’s family is respected.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher shared:
“Devastating news about Diogo Jota and his brother André this morning. Thoughts are with everyone in their family, especially Rute and their three lovely kids.”
Gary Neville added:
“That is heartbreaking news… All my love and best wishes to his family.”
Porto, where both brothers once played, wrote:
“Porto is in mourning… May they rest in peace.”
Jota had earned nearly 50 international caps, featuring in Euro 2022 and Euro 2024. He helped Portugal win two Nations League titles, most recently in May 2025.
He joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves and played over 180 matches, winning the Premier League in the 2024/25 season, as well as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in 2022.
