“Make Zimbabwe proud”: President Mnangagwa Gifts US$100,000 to National Rugby Team Sables Ahead of Semi-Final Clash
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has thrown his full support behind the Zimbabwe senior men’s rugby team, the Sables, by donating US$100,000 to boost their Rugby Africa Cup campaign.
Meeting with the squad at State House in Harare on Thursday evening, Mnangagwa personally handed over the funds and commended the team for their dominant 43–8 victory against Morocco in the quarter-finals.
Praise for Victory and Call to Promote Zimbabwe
In his address, the President congratulated the Sables on their achievement and urged them to be proud ambassadors of Zimbabwe on and off the field.
“I want to congratulate you, the Sables, for the victory against Morocco. The achievement is pivotal as we embark on our journey to reposition and refocus our sporting delivery systems on the critical path of an excelling sporting nation that Zimbabwe is becoming,” he said.

He continued:
“Your participation in the international arena, as the Sables, automatically makes you brand ambassadors of Zimbabwe. I, therefore, challenge you to utilise this role as sports diplomats to promote our country’s image, our tourism and investment prospects under our engagement and re-engagement policy.”
Backing the Sables for World Cup Qualification
President Mnangagwa expressed confidence in the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, pledging continued government support.
“Be assured that our nation is behind you. Government will continue to support you, and I, your President, am confident of your dedication and sporting capabilities. As you embark on your journey to qualify for the World Cup, may your resurgence yield great success for our country. Go out there and make Zimbabwe proud,” he said.
Posting on X, he added:
“I extended USD 100,000 to the Zimbabwe Sables in support of their Rugby Africa Cup campaign. After defeating Morocco, they now face Kenya on Sunday. We rally behind them as they aim for Rugby World Cup qualification.”
Crunch Semi-Final Against Kenya Looms
