Douglas Mwonzora Faces Arrest Over US$2 500 Child Maintenance
MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora is facing arrest after defaulting on his child maintenance payments for five months, leading to arrears of US$2 500 (about R46 000).
The warrant of arrest was issued by a Harare Magistrate nearly two months ago, but police have not yet enforced it, according to the Masvingo Mirror on 11 October 2025.
Court orders and arrears
Mwonzora was ordered in February 2024 to pay US$500 (about R9 200) a month for the upkeep of his 10-year-old son with Getrude Chuma, as well as school fees.
The arrears initially covered March to July 2025. Since then, the outstanding amount has risen to US$3 500 (about R64 400) after he also failed to pay in August and September.
Chuma said she was frustrated by the delays in enforcing the warrant. She told the Masvingo Mirror:
“I am not happy with Police at Harare Central for failing to serve the warrant on Mwonzora for the third time.”
The case is registered under case number M389.
Mwonzora responds
Mwonzora told the Masvingo Mirror that he was not aware of the warrant of arrest. However, he confirmed that the matter exists as a civil case.
“I haven’t received the warrant of arrest you are talking about. I don’t deserve any warrant. This is a sniff campaign,” he said.
National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, told the Masvingo Mirror he would respond on why the warrant had not been executed. The paper reported that no explanation had been provided by the time of publication.
Warrant still unserved
The warrant remains outstanding despite being issued nearly two months ago. Efforts by the Masvingo Mirror to establish why police have not acted were unsuccessful.
Chuma insists the authorities have failed to take action, leaving the matter unresolved.
Mwonzora maintains that the warrant should not exist and has described the issue as an attempt to smear him.
