Life Imprisonment For Man Who Killed Elderly Grandfather With Axe

A 23-year-old Gokwe South man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he killed his own grandfather with an axe. The High Court, sitting in Gokwe, heard the gruesome details of how Blessed Nyashadzashe Mapulani turned on 82-year-old Joel Manyevere in an act of unspeakable violence at their homestead in Mugahwa Village.

The court was told that the attack was both sudden and ferocious. Following a dispute, Mapulani seized an axe and struck the elderly Mr Manyevere four times. The fatal blows landed on his chest, neck, and shoulder, leading to injuries so severe that the elderly man stood no chance. In a desperate attempt to hide his crime, Mapulani then carried his grandfather’s body to a spot roughly 800 metres from their home, where he buried him in a shallow, unmarked grave.

Details Of The Murder Case

The grim secret began to unravel when neighbours noticed the elderly Manyevere’s conspicuous absence. Their concern quickly turned to dread when they discovered bloodstains at his property, prompting them to alert the authorities. Officers from ZRP Manoti launched a search, which led them to the hastily covered grave. There, they made the harrowing discovery of Manyevere’s body, alongside the murder weapon, a bloodied axe, discarded with the victim.

A subsequent post-mortem examination conducted at the United Bulawayo Hospitals detailed the horrifying extent of the attack. The medical report concluded that the victim succumbed to a combination of acute cardiorespiratory failure, a cervical spinal cord injury, and a fracture to the cervical spine, all evidence of the savage force used against him.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) welcomed the sentencing, stating that it sends an unequivocal message about the consequences of such brutality. A representative for the NPAZ stated:

“The justice system will not tolerate brutal acts of violence, particularly against the elderly and vulnerable. This sentence serves as a stern reminder that the law will always protect the sanctity of human life.”
