Elvis Chipezeze Wins Sixth Straight Carling Knockout Man of the Match Award
Zimbabwean goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze once again proved why he remains one of the most consistent performers in South African football.
Despite Magesi FC’s 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals on Tuesday night, the veteran shot-stopper walked away with yet another Man of the Match award.
The result may have ended Magesi’s cup run, but Chipezeze’s performance was the night’s standout story. He produced a string of fine saves, particularly in the first half, frustrating Pirates’ attackers and keeping his side in the game for long periods.
Six in a Row for the Veteran Keeper
Chipezeze’s latest recognition makes it six consecutive Carling Knockout Man of the Match awards — an extraordinary streak stretching back to last season.
His consistency between the posts has made him a fan favourite and a symbol of reliability in the competition.
By the 33rd minute of Tuesday’s match, the 35-year-old had already made six crucial saves and maintained an impressive 88% ball distribution accuracy. Although Magesi eventually bowed out, the former Baroka FC star’s efforts did not go unnoticed.
In total, the six awards have earned him R600,000 in prize money, as the Man of the Match honours are determined by fan votes.
“We Serve the Fans” — Chipezeze
Speaking after the match, Chipezeze dedicated his success to the supporters, acknowledging their role in motivating the team.
“Firstly, I just want to say thank you to the fans. They came in their numbers and like I always say, we serve them because the more they are here to push us, the better for football,” said Chipezeze on SuperSport TV.
Reflecting on the game, he added:
“You could see what was happening on the field of play. Coming to the game, we knew it was going to be difficult because they were coming from a setback in the Champions League.
“We tried to hold them up in the first half, but it was not meant to be. But that’s football, congratulations to them. Credit must also go to the boys, we executed the game plan very well.
“They [Pirates] had a moment of brilliance in their first goal and from there it was going to be a big task, but congratulations to them and hard luck to us. We just shift focus to the league and that’s the most important.”
A Fan Favourite and True Professional
Known for his composure and leadership, Chipezeze has transformed himself into one of the Carling Knockout’s most beloved figures. His humility and professionalism continue to win him admiration from both fans and fellow players.
“Like I said earlier, I’m just happy. We are here to put smiles on their faces, that’s the most important thing. We are here to serve them and once we perform like this, credit must also go to them.
“They are here week in, week out. Today it was chilly, it’s raining, but they are here supporting the boys and that’s the only thing that makes me proud and I’m grateful for what they have done to me in this competition,” he said.
