American retail giant Walmart has officially announced its first branded store in South Africa will be housed at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg. This landmark development signals a significant new chapter for the company in the African market, promising a unique blend of local and international products for consumers. The store will be managed by a dedicated team of 80 staff members, with a strong focus on sourcing from South African suppliers while introducing a hand-picked array of global brands to the shelves.
Shoppers can anticipate a comprehensive retail experience, spanning from fresh and frozen foods to groceries, health and beauty products, apparel, electronics, and homeware. Adding a touch of Hollywood glamour to the mix, the store will feature actress Drew Barrymore’s popular ‘Beautiful’ line of small appliances, which includes stylishly designed air fryers, kettles, and stand mixers in soft pastel hues.

Walmart To Open First Store In South Africa At Clearwater Mall
The merchandise strategy for the new store aims to offer South Africans a novel and exciting shopping trip. Mark Scott, the vice-president of merchandise, explained that the goal is to move beyond the ordinary. He stated, “A key objective has been to broaden product choices in a way that creates a sense of discovery, where shoppers are pleasantly surprised by options that bring interest and excitement to their everyday shopping experience. While Drew Barrymore’s Beautiful range delivers this in spectacular fashion, we also see it in simple moments, for example, our sweets and confectionery aisle features international favourites such as Mike & Ike, Reese’s, Warheads, and Nerds – brands not commonly found in South Africa.”
The store’s physical layout has been meticulously planned with the customer in mind. Miles van Rensburg, Massmart president and CEO, confirmed the design would prioritise a pleasant and efficient environment. He noted,
“The store will incorporate a customer-centric design characterised by bright lighting, spacious aisles, intuitive inter-department flow and efficient checkout, supported by friendly, helpful service.”
A Personal Triumph and Community Commitment
Leading this historic venture is store manager Onicca Mothapo, whose two decades in retail have led to this pinnacle moment. For Mothapo, the opening is more than just a business launch; it is the culmination of a remarkable personal journey. She shared,
“Opening this store is deeply personal. From where I began my career as a store cashier, I could never have imagined that I would one day grow to become store manager for the first Walmart store in Africa.”
