Charlton Hwende sparked debate on X after claiming MPs enjoyed generous benefits. He suggested former legislators received cars, stands, loans, medical aid and bonuses. He argued that both ruling and opposition MPs had quietly enjoyed these perks since 2000.
Hwende said people ignored this truth because they favoured certain politicians. His post implied that he deserved financial support from the government. It also hinted that many critics were being selective.
Hwende’s message spread quickly and prompted sharp reactions. Soon after, David Coltart stepped in to challenge the accuracy of Hwende’s claim.

David Coltart shuns Hwende’s benefits claim
David Coltart responded firmly and dismissed Hwende’s statements as false. He stressed that MPs elected in 2000, 2005 and 2008 only bought duty-free cars. He said they earned small salaries and used basic medical aid. He noted that no stands or loans were ever handed out. Coltart made it clear that he never received any extra benefits.
He stated that his situation as a Cabinet Minister was similar. He earned only US$100 when he joined the Cabinet in 2009. His salary rose to US$3500 by 2013. He confirmed that he only bought his ministerial vehicles at a depreciated value. Coltart insisted that no housing loans or additional perks were given.
His detailed explanation directly contradicted Hwende’s claims. His response also challenged the wider suggestion of secret benefits. Coltart’s message gained strong support from many readers. His clarity and tone brought a different light to the discussion.
The debate continues
After David Coltart dismissed Charlton Hwende’s benefits claim, Zimbabweans continued the debate.
@IZvangu85788 “Opposition has been bought . Democracy is non existent in Zimbabwe as we speak.”
@ChaChaChaE66353 “A survey of perks for MPs across SADC will demonstrate that Zim’s position is on the low side. As a lawyer, you should be advocating for better remuneration for those in Parliament as this is the body constitutionally entrusted to hold Gvnt to account. Remunerate MPs well on time”
@sirmude “It was the best decision ever for Nelson Chamisa to quit CCC, and it is by God’s grace that he is still alive.”
@kamba_bruc60693 “Thank you for correcting a liar who is justifying their selfish need to have more at the expense of the electorate”
@Ishy1021 “There should be a constitutional ammendment which allows citizens to fire an MP who won’t be serving them. Nelson had scene the importance of this and is well ahead!”
