Nurse Arrested After Using Deceased Identities to Claim USD15,000 from Zimnat Life Assurance

A 40-year-old registered nurse from Mutare, was arrested for defrauding Zimnat Life Assurance of USD15,000.

She is accused of claiming life insurance benefits using the identities of deceased individuals.

Court Appearance and Charges

Shamiso Esinath Nyamundanda (née Musafari), stationed at Bamba Rural Health Clinic, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing three counts of fraud.

According to National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, between August 2022 and July 2025 she opened three life insurance policies in the names of deceased persons and claiming USD5,000 per policy, submitting forged affidavits in the process.

Authorities say she submitted forged affidavits bearing her handwriting and signature, falsely presenting herself as a relative of the deceased.

How the Fraud Was Discovered

The scheme was uncovered when an assurance manager noticed irregularities in the documents and reported the matter to the police.

The total payouts of USD15,000 had been deposited into Nyamundanda’s bank account.

Bail and Next Court Date

She was granted USD300 bail and is expected to return to court on 9 December 2025 for routine remand.

Authorities Warn Against Insurance Fraud

Insurance authorities emphasized that fraud undermines public trust and harms legitimate policyholders.

They warned that professionals abusing positions of trust for personal gain will face full accountability under the law.
