Brandon Petersen reacted on social media after missing the squad. He was among six players left out of the Bafana Bafana FIFA World Cup group.
Fans on social media quickly questioned the selection decision. Some supporters targeted coach Hugo Broos over perceived bias. They claimed he favoured non-Kaizer Chiefs players.
Despite the setback, Petersen stayed positive online. He posted praise for teammate Bradley Cross on Instagram Stories.
Cross is one of two uncapped players in the squad.
Petersen, with 15 clean sheets, shared his support. He wrote: “So happy and proud of you, my brother”.
Supporters of Kaizer Chiefs encouraged him in comments. One fan said: “We are behind you, we are looking forward to your next season”. Another added: “Keep your head up, you are the best and you did well”
Public squad announcement draws backlash
Officials revealed the squad at the Union Buildings during a formal ceremony. The event formed part of the FIFA World Cup send-off.
Cyril Ramaphosa and Gayton McKenzie attended the announcement. Six excluded players watched as the squad was unveiled.
The public setting intensified criticism from football supporters. Many described the experience as “cruel” and “humiliating”.
