US$250,000 Highlanders Payment Comes As Chivayo Raises Fresh Questions
Businessman Wicknell Chivayo has broken his silence on growing questions surrounding his sponsorship of Highlanders, confirming that a further US$250,000 will be released to the Bulawayo giants this week.
Chivayo pledged US$1 million towards Highlanders’ 2026 season. However, he told ZimLive on Monday, 7 September 2026, that he was frustrated by what he described as a lack of transparency over the use of his money.
“I gave them money for a perimeter wall around the clubhouse, but they started abusing it.”
He also questioned why Highlanders coach Benjani Mwaruwari had allegedly gone for months without receiving his salary.
“I gave them the full salary for Benjy, one-year salary in advance. I put it in the trust account. Why isn’t Benjy being paid when I gave them that money a year in advance?”
Chivayo Releases Another US$250,000
Despite his concerns, Chivayo said he had agreed to release another US$250,000 following an intervention by an unnamed senior politician from Matabeleland.
“My support for football and charity work remains unwavering, but financial support must always be accompanied by order, responsibility and results.”
Highlanders have faced player strikes and threats of industrial action over unpaid salaries and bonuses.
Jabulani Nkomo Named In Highlanders Money Dispute
A source familiar with the club’s financial arrangements disputed Chivayo’s account, claiming the sponsorship money was placed in a trust account managed by Chivayo’s point person, Jabulani Nkomo, and a law firm.
“If the sponsor wants to know what happened to the money for the wall, he should ask Jabu.”
The source also claimed Highlanders had never received the sponsorship directly.
Highlanders had not responded to the allegations by publication.
