Emotional Siya Kolisi bids Sharks farewell after reported pay cut

Siya Kolisi led the Sharks to a strong 54–19 victory over Italian opposition at Kings Park Stadium. However, he also delivered an emotional farewell in his final match for the club. He scored two tries and still addressed fans with deep regret after the season.

He said: “We’ve disappointed the fans…I’m grateful [but] I’m sorry that we couldnt achieve more. We achieved way below standard for the talent that we have.

He added: “I’m glad I could be part of it a little bit”.

Siya also described the day as deeply emotional. Furthermore, he thanked supporters and the Sharks family for their backing. He reflected: “It’s been a chapter of my life that I will cherish”.

Homecoming to Stormers and Financial Sacrifice

Siya Kolisi will return to the Stormers in July to be closer to his family. Previously, he explained his decision as a personal and professional choice.

“My family is in Cape Town, and it is important to me to be close to them. This move gives me the chance to do that while also giving back to the team and fans who made such a big contribution to the player and person I am today.

He added: “I am looking forward to contributing in any way I can to the future success and happiness of this special club and its incredible supporters”.

Stormers boss John Dobson confirmed Kolisi accepted a major financial sacrifice. He stated: “Siya was desperate to come back and made a massive financial sacrifice to be here. That gesture is appreciated.

He further explained: “He said all I want to do is play for the Stormers and come back to Cape Town. When you have a Springbok captain who has made a great contribution to the country, make that gesture; it would be unfair to him to reveal the numbers, but that showed where his heart is. There is not one element of financial gain.”
