Fire Tears Through Glenview Area 8 Market Yet Again As 483 Stalls Burn Down

Fire Guts Glenview Area 8 Market, Leaving Over 2,000 Traders Counting Losses

A massive fire ripped through the Glenview Area 8 Furniture Market in Harare during the early hours of Saturday morning, destroying hundreds of stalls and leaving thousands of traders devastated after goods and equipment worth millions of dollars went up in flames.

Authorities said the blaze broke out around 1AM on May 17, 2026, before quickly spreading across the busy furniture manufacturing hub. Government officials confirmed that 483 stalls were destroyed in the inferno, while losses are estimated at around US$15 million (approximately R270 million).

According to Nick Mangwana’s X account, more than 2,000 traders were affected.

“A devastating fire gutted the Glenview Area 8 Furniture Market in the early hours today, destroying 483 stalls and leaving over 2,000 traders counting heavy losses,” wrote Nick Mangwana.

“The blaze, which broke out around 1 AM, consumed furniture, raw materials, and equipment worth an estimated US$15 million.”

Traders Left Devastated

The Glenview Area 8 complex is one of Harare’s busiest furniture markets and supports thousands of families who rely on carpentry and furniture-making for survival.

Many traders reportedly arrived at the scene to find their workspaces already engulfed in flames.

The Herald reported that operators at the complex described the incident as one of the worst fires ever recorded at the site.

“Furniture operators at the complex described the incident as the biggest fire ever recorded at the site,” the publication reported.

The Harare City Council fire brigade managed to contain the inferno before it spread further, but most of the affected structures could not be saved because of the intensity of the fire.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the blaze. Preliminary suspicions include possible arson or an electrical fault.

Minister Expected To Visit Scene

As investigations continue, Government officials have moved in to assess the scale of destruction.

ZiFM Stereo News reported that Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe was expected to visit Glenview Area 8 on Sunday afternoon.

“The cause of the blaze is still unknown, with the area having experienced similar fire incidents time and again,” ZiFM Stereo News posted.

Officials from the Civil Protection Unit and the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises are also assessing the damage.

Mangwana said the scale of destruction may even force authorities to consider declaring the incident a national disaster because extensive rebuilding will be required.

Security Concerns Raised After Inferno

Meanwhile, concerns have also emerged over security at the furniture complex.

According to ZBC News, one witness claimed that a security guard stationed at the premises was intoxicated when the fire broke out.

“One of the first people to arrive at the scene of the Glen View Area 8 fire has recounted the ordeal following the inferno,” ZBC News reported.

Harare Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Senator Charles Tawengwa also urged traders to work with reputable security companies that provide insurance cover.

The Glenview Area 8 complex has suffered several fires over the years, with social media users once again questioning safety standards at the crowded market.

Some users even alleged foul play and political interference, although no evidence has yet been provided to support those claims.
