Government Rolls Out Independence Medals For 50 000 War Veterans
The Government has approved the conferment of Independence Medals on 50 000 liberation war veterans during this year’s Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Day celebrations on August 11, 2026.
The medals will be presented as part of the country’s annual Honours and Awards programme, which recognises Zimbabweans who have made significant contributions to the nation.
Government Approves 50 000 Independence Medals
The Chronicle reports that Cabinet approved the mass conferment of the medals through the Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution.
Speaking after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Zhemu Soda said the awards are provided for under the Constitution.
“The 2026 honours and awards conferment ceremony will take place on August 11, 2026, during the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations.”
He added:
“The exercise is part of ongoing efforts to recognise and honour those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our beloved Motherland, Zimbabwe.”
The medals will be presented during the main ZDF Day celebrations at Rufaro Stadium in Harare.
Heroes Day will be commemorated on August 10 under the theme “Lest We Forget”, while ZDF Day follows on August 11 under the theme “ZDF: Guaranteeing Peace and Stability for the Attainment of Vision 2030.”
