Harare Installs Smart Solar Traffic Lights to Tackle Congestion and Road Violations

Harare motorists will soon experience a smarter and more efficient traffic management system following the rollout of solar-powered traffic lights at key intersections in the Central Business District under a joint initiative between the City of Harare and City Parking.

The project, which forms part of City Parking’s Traffic Signals Rehabilitation Programme, seeks to ease congestion, improve road safety and strengthen traffic law enforcement in the capital. The modern traffic lights are being mounted on reinforced concrete pillars and will work alongside the Government’s expanding surveillance camera network.

Reinforced Infrastructure to Curb Damage

Authorities say the decision to replace conventional poles with concrete-reinforced structures was prompted by repeated incidents of vandalism and damage caused by reckless driving.

According to city officials, newly installed traffic lights were often destroyed within weeks of being erected, resulting in costly repairs and disruptions to traffic flow. The new pillars have been designed to withstand heavy impact, making it far more difficult for motorists to damage the infrastructure.

Officials believe the tougher structures will reduce maintenance costs while discouraging careless driving at busy intersections.

Solar Technology to Keep Traffic Moving

A key feature of the upgraded system is its reliance on solar energy, ensuring uninterrupted operation even during electricity outages.

The city has frequently experienced traffic congestion when power cuts render traffic signals inactive. The solar-powered units are expected to eliminate such disruptions, helping maintain smoother traffic movement throughout the day.

Motorists have also welcomed the installation of digital countdown timers, which provide drivers with a clear indication of when lights are about to change.

Drivers Welcome Modernisation

Many road users say the new system offers better visibility and improves decision-making at intersections.

Motorist Justin Chirenda said the countdown timers provide advance warning and make it easier for drivers to comply with traffic regulations.

Another driver, Tariro Chikuse, described the upgrade as long overdue, noting that older traffic lights often malfunctioned or changed unexpectedly, creating confusion for motorists navigating busy junctions.

She added that integrating the new traffic signals with surveillance cameras could improve accountability and road discipline.

Expansion Planned Across Major Junctions

City Parking says the project will be extended to all major intersections within the CBD using revenue generated from parking operations.

Public relations manager Francis Mandaza confirmed that the first installation at the intersection of Julius Nyerere Way and Robert Mugabe Way has already been completed, with work now progressing at other strategic locations.

Mandaza said a centralised traffic control room is also being established to monitor vehicle movement in real time. The facility will allow operators to adjust traffic-light sequences during peak periods, helping ease congestion on heavily used routes.

Authorities expect the combination of smart traffic technology, solar power, reinforced infrastructure and camera surveillance to significantly improve safety, traffic flow and compliance with road regulations across Harare’s city centre.
