Soldiers And Military Equipment Coming To Harare Streets: Here’s Why
Harare residents have been told not to panic as soldiers and military equipment move through parts of the capital over the next four days as preparations for the 2026 Defence Forces Day celebrations get underway.
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) will conduct a rehearsal march from Saturday, 8 August, to Tuesday, 11 August, with personnel and equipment travelling from Charles Gumbo Barracks to Rufaro Stadium, the venue for this year’s celebrations.
Soldiers To Move Along Major Harare Roads
The procession will leave Charles Gumbo Barracks, formerly 1 Commando Regiment, and travel along Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Expressway, previously known as Airport Road.
It will then turn into Vitalis Zvinavashe Road, formerly Dieppe Avenue, before proceeding along Cripps Road and Remembrance Drive towards Rufaro Stadium.
The movement means residents and road users along the route are likely to see soldiers and military equipment during the rehearsal period.
Defence Forces Ask Public Not To Panic
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces said the public should remain calm and view the movement as part of preparations for Defence Forces Day.
In a statement issued on Friday, 7 August, the organisation said:
“The general public is, therefore, urged not to panic, but rather join and celebrate together with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.”
The rehearsals will culminate in the Defence Forces Day commemorations on Tuesday, 11 August.
Residents and motorists have been encouraged to take note of the planned movement as preparations continue for the annual event.
