Hugo Broos Sounds Alarm as Bafana Bafana Struggle for Form Ahead of Mexico World Cup Clash

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has acknowledged that South Africa still has significant work to do ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a disappointing draw against Jamaica in a warm-up fixture.

South Africa were held to a 1-1 draw by the Caribbean side in a closed-door international friendly played in Pachuca, Mexico, on Saturday, with striker Lyle Foster finding the back of the net for Bafana.

The result extended South Africa’s winless streak to five matches, adding to growing concerns about the team’s form as they prepare for a difficult opening assignment against tournament co-hosts Mexico on Thursday.

Winless Run Raises Concerns

Bafana Bafana head into the World Cup without a victory in their last five outings. The sequence includes draws against Jamaica, Nicaragua and Panama, as well as defeats to Panama and Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages.

The latest result has intensified scrutiny over the team’s readiness for the global showpiece, particularly with a clash against a confident Mexican side looming.

Broos admitted that the performance against Jamaica fell below expectations and said the technical team would have to quickly identify and address the shortcomings.

The performance was not what I expected. I think we have to analyse the game very well and see what was really wrong and try to make it better in the next few days so that we are ready for the first game against Mexico,” said Broos.

“I thought we were close [to where I want the team to be before the opening match], but again, it was, for me, a disappointing game against Jamaica. So, yes, I have to look at what went wrong.

“I think it was also a matter of mentality. We have to do more, much more, than what we did this afternoon to have good results in the World Cup in the next few weeks.”

Jamaica Coach Issues Warning

Jamaica coach Rudolph Speid believes South Africa did not play with full intensity, suggesting some players may have been cautious ahead of the World Cup.

Speid warned that Bafana should expect a vastly different challenge when they face Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

As it relates to South Africa, I think they were playing within themselves, though, because probably, you know, players don’t want to get injured and everybody wants to impress the coach.

“I didn’t think they were going for it as much as they could have. But playing against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, there’s going to be 123,000 screaming Mexicans in there, I can tell you.

“They’ll probably overload it, they’re going to be pressing high up the pitch, especially in the first half. They’re going to be pressing very high in the first half, relentless pressing, but of course, the pressure will ease as the game goes along,” Speid said.
