Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church Leader Aaron Munodawafa Dies At 111

Aaron Munodawafa Dead: Mugodhi Apostolic Church Confirms Death Of Bishop

The Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church has confirmed the death of its leader, Aaron Munodawafa, who passed away at 111, marking the end of a life spanning more than a century and shaping one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent apostolic movements.

The church announced that Munodawafa died on January 27, 2026, at the home of one of his sons in Gokwe, with the confirmation made public on January 28, 2026. His passing comes at a time when Zimbabwe is mourning the loss of several long-serving religious figures.

Church Confirms Passing

In an official statement released on the evening of January 28, the church’s legal department confirmed the death.

“The Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church confirms the passing of Bishop Aaron Munodawafa, who died peacefully due to old age on January 27, 2026,” the statement said.

The church disclosed that the centenarian leader had lost his sight before his death.

“At the time of his passing, Bishop Munodawafa was blind and had been under the care of his family,” the statement added.

NewsDay reports that Munodawafa died in the afternoon while staying with relatives in Gokwe. The church described his death as peaceful, bringing to a close decades of service within the apostolic movement.

Munodawafa rose to the helm of the Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church (MAFC) in 2019, following the death of the church’s founder, Tadeau Mugodhi. Despite his advanced age, he remained a revered spiritual figure, with followers viewing him as a custodian of tradition and stability.

Supreme Court Affirmed His Leadership

Munodawafa’s tenure was shaped by a prolonged leadership dispute that ended at the Supreme Court. In a decisive ruling, the apex court confirmed him as the substantive bishop of the church, dismissing challenges to his authority.

The Supreme Court upheld a High Court finding that the church is governed by a written constitution and that succession is based on seniority rather than inheritance.

“Succession to the office of bishop is not hereditary but constitutionally regulated,” the court stated.

The ruling confirmed that Munodawafa, as the most senior vice bishop at the time, was lawfully appointed bishop, effectively ending years of internal conflict within the church.

Burial Date And Location Announced

The church has announced that Munodawafa will be laid to rest on February 7, 2026.

“The late Bishop Aaron Munodawafa will be buried at Jani Village, Guru area, in Masvingo Province,” the church said.

His death follows shortly after that of African Apostolic Church founder Archbishop Ernest Paul Mwazha, who died in November at 107, underscoring the passing of an era in Zimbabwe’s apostolic leadership.
