Police release names of Triangle crash victims
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of six of the nine people who died after a passenger bus collided with a goods train in Triangle, Masvingo Province.
The fatal accident occurred on 16 June 2026 at approximately 8:34am at a rail-level crossing along Mbizi Road. According to police, nine people lost their lives while 29 others sustained injuries in one of the country’s deadliest transport tragedies in recent years.
In an update issued on 17 June 2026, police confirmed that six of the deceased had been identified by their next of kin.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the victims were identified as Knowledge Chivava of Section 64, Triangle; Shepard Shumba (18); Maria Hlabwani (40) of Nyahombe; Tinashe Mushindi (18); Chinguvo Lucia (49) of Mapepa Area; and Learnmore Mutize (2).
Police said the identities of the remaining three victims would be made public once formal identification processes had been completed.
Triangle bus and train collision leaves nine dead
The crash happened when a passenger bus travelling from Chikombedzi to Masvingo collided with a goods train at a railway crossing in Triangle.
Emergency services, police officers and ambulance crews responded to the scene and assisted survivors before transporting the injured to hospital.
Earlier reports indicated that seven adults and two minors were among those killed in the collision.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragedy and said authorities were continuing to gather information regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident.
In the latest statement, Commissioner Nyathi said: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police releases the names of six of the nine victims who perished in the accident. They were identified by their next of kin.”
NRZ comments on railway crossing safety
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) also expressed condolences to the affected families and reiterated the importance of observing railway crossing regulations.
NRZ Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Manager Andrew Kunambura previously said preliminary information suggested the bus entered the crossing without following procedures requiring motorists to stop and check for approaching trains before proceeding.
Police have urged motorists to remain vigilant and comply with all road traffic regulations.
Commissioner Nyathi said the police service “reiterates that drivers should observe all road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives.”
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the cause of the collision and the condition of those injured in the crash.
