Sables Turn to Youth for Zambia Clash as Benade Eyes Improved Performance

Sables Turn to Youth for Zambia Clash as Piet Benade Eyes Improved Performance

Zimbabwe senior men’s rugby coach Piet Benade has expressed confidence in his youthful front row options ahead of the Sables’ second international Test against Zambia, as the hosts look to build on last weekend’s win.

The two sides are set to meet again at Hartsfield Rugby Ground in what is expected to be a more intense encounter following a competitive first clash.

Young Front Row Given Opportunity

Benade has handed starting roles to Under-20 captain Emmanuel Gabi and Zvikomborero Chimoto, who come in as replacements for experienced props Michael Kumbirai and Deanne Makoni.

The senior duo have returned to their respective clubs in Europe and South Africa, opening the door for the young forwards to step into the spotlight.

Benade backed the pair to rise to the occasion, saying their inclusion reflects the team’s commitment to developing new talent.

Sables Aim for Improved Performance

Zimbabwe go into the match on the back of a 43-31 victory over Zambia, although the performance drew mixed reactions from supporters and analysts.

Despite the criticism, Benade believes the first Test provided a solid platform, particularly for players who had previously been on the fringes of selection.

He noted that while the team showed attacking promise, there is room for improvement in defensive discipline and game management.

Focus on Defence and Discipline

The Sables coach stressed the need for greater sharpness, especially in defence, where lapses allowed Zambia to gain territory and apply pressure through their forwards and lineouts.

He said maintaining patience and structure would be key to limiting the visitors’ opportunities in the return fixture.

With no major injury concerns reported, Benade is expected to retain the core of the side that featured in the opening encounter.

Zambia Fired Up for Revenge

Meanwhile, the Zambian side — known as the Zambia national rugby union team — have signalled their intent to bounce back strongly.

Vice-captain Mphatso Mwashi has openly declared his team’s determination to secure victory, insisting they will correct mistakes from the first Test and stick to their game plan.

His comments underline the growing intensity surrounding the fixture, with Zambia eager to overturn last weekend’s result.
