South African Actor Mfana ‘Jones’ Hlophe Dies At 55

South African entertainment has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran actor, singer and dancer Mfana “Jones” Hlophe at the age of 55.

Hlophe, who spent 37 years in the film and television industry, was recognised for his contributions to acting and theatre, as well as his work in music and dance.

His death was announced by fellow actor Zola Hashatsi in a Facebook post, while Generations: The Legacy also issued a message expressing sadness over his passing.

Zola Hashatsi Announces Mfana Hlophe’s Death

Hashatsi paid tribute to the late entertainer, reflecting on the influence he had on younger performers and the contribution he made to the arts.

“It’s with a heavy heart to announce the passing of fellow thespian Mfana Jones Hlophe. He practically raised us. Thank you for your contribution to the arts. I’m thankful and appreciate your work. #RIPMfanaJonesHlophe”

Hashatsi’s message highlighted the impact Hlophe had on fellow performers during his long career in the entertainment industry.

Generations: The Legacy Pays Tribute

The production team behind Generations: The Legacy also confirmed that it was mourning Hlophe’s passing, extending condolences to his family.

In a statement, the show said:

“On behalf of the producers, cast and crew, we are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Mr Mfana Jones Hlophe. We would like to send our condolences to the family. We hold you close in our thoughts during this painful time.
#Thumbeza, kamyeni ntombi zenda ngonyezi.”

A Career Spanning Nearly Four Decades

Hlophe began his career in 1989 and went on to build a presence across South African television and film.

Among his screen appearances was the 1992 film Sarafina!. He also featured in several television productions, including Mama’s Love, Uzalo, Zabalaza, Generations: The Legacy, Imbewu: The Seed and KwaBaba.

Beyond acting, Hlophe was also a singer and dancer, making him a multi-talented performer whose career spanned different areas of the arts.
