VP Chiwenga Applauds Churches – Says They’re Key to Zimbabwe’s Development

Constantino Chiwenga stressed the church’s role in promoting unity, peace, and development. He urged Zimbabweans to embrace prayer, solidarity, and a shared purpose.

He spoke at the St Joseph Guild Weekend of Prayer at St Paul’s Musami Mission. There, he joined congregants from the Archdiocese of Harare.

Moreover, he said the church remains central to moral guidance and social cohesion.

“We need to pray for our country, for national unity, and to rise above the spirit of individualism. We must cherish the values of a common destiny. By strengthening our spiritual foundations, the church reinforces the moral fabric of our nation and builds the solidarity necessary for economic and social development,” he said.

He then urged citizens to follow St Joseph’s virtues. These include humility, discipline, strength, and unwavering faith.

“Through institutions such as the St Joseph Guild, the church plays a pivotal role in nurturing responsible leadership, discipline and community participation—qualities that are indispensable to national growth, stability and resilience,” he added

Strengthening Healthcare Through Partnerships

Before the service, the Vice President toured St Paul’s Musami Mission Hospital. Missionaries established this historic hospital in 1957.

He praised its contribution to healthcare delivery. The hospital currently serves about 150,000 people.

Furthermore, he said Government and the church will mobilise more resources. They aim to strengthen mission hospitals nationwide.

He also highlighted the need for better staff accommodation. He pledged immediate support toward this goal.

“We are prioritising people’s lives. Institutions like this are vital to our healthcare system. I have contributed US$4 000 to kick-start efforts to mobilise funding for the construction of accommodation for nurses and doctors,” he said.

Community Leaders Applaud the Initiative

Church leaders welcomed the Vice President’s participation and support. They described his presence as a sign of strong partnership. Kudakwashe Kadoro said the visit showed commitment to guild values.

Meanwhile, Alex Tatenda Dakamire highlighted the event’s importance. He said it promotes spiritual renewal among men and community leaders.

He also praised the Vice President’s message on leadership. He encouraged men to lead in families and communities. The prayer weekend began on April 23 and ends Sunday. It aims to deepen faith while promoting unity and purposeful living.
