Zimbabwean ICT Leader Stanley Mpofu Appointed to Prestigious SAICA Board
Zimbabwean-born academic and technology leader Dr Stanley Mpofu has been appointed to the board of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
This marks another significant milestone in a career spanning more than three decades in information and communications technology and higher education.
SAICA is South Africa’s leading professional accountancy body, responsible for the training, accreditation and regulation of chartered accountants, and is recognised as one of the most influential institutions of its kind globally.
Recognition of Leadership and Governance Expertise
Mpofu, who serves as chief information officer at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), said the appointment reflects the confidence placed in his leadership and governance capabilities.
He described the new role as an opportunity to contribute to ethical leadership and organisational excellence while helping strengthen accountability, transparency and effective oversight.
According to Mpofu, his responsibilities will be guided by established corporate governance principles, including the King IV framework and emerging King V standards, with a focus on ensuring sustainable and effective organisational performance.
Expanding Influence Across South Africa
The appointment comes shortly after Mpofu joined the ICT Committee of Council at South Africa’s Council on Higher Education, further expanding his influence in the country’s technology and education sectors.
He also chairs Higher Education Information Technology South Africa and serves on several national ICT-related boards, placing him at the centre of efforts to shape digital transformation and governance across the country.
Despite taking on the new board role, Mpofu said he remains committed to his duties at Wits University and intends to use the opportunity to contribute to national development through his governance expertise.
From Technician to Technology Visionary
Mpofu’s career journey began in 1995 as a desktop technician at Transnet. Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks before being appointed CIO of Wits University in 2017.
Under his leadership, the university’s ICT division evolved into a strategic operation supporting innovation, digital learning and institutional transformation.
He played a critical role in introducing smart classroom technologies and steering the university’s rapid transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring academic continuity during an unprecedented period.
Championing Digital Inclusion
Beyond Wits, Mpofu has been a strong advocate for digital access and connectivity in higher education.
His efforts have helped expand Eduroam connectivity across South Africa’s 26 public universities and other institutions, including the City of Johannesburg and Airports Company South Africa, improving access to digital resources for thousands of users.
A chartered CIO and certified director, Mpofu is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s foremost digital transformation leaders.
Award-Winning Career
His contributions to the ICT sector have earned widespread recognition. Among his accolades are the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa’s Visionary CIO of the Year award in 2020, CIO of the Year in 2024, and the prestigious CIO of the Decade in the Public Sector honour.
The latest appointment to the SAICA board further cements Mpofu’s standing as a respected leader whose expertise bridges technology, education and corporate governance.
