A Gwanda man is behind bars after a shocking case where a mother only reported the rape of her own 11-year-old child after discovering her lover was cheating on her. The 42-year-old offender was sentenced to an effective 20 years imprisonment by the Gwanda Regional Magistrates’ Court on 2 February 2026 for the crime committed in Esigodini in December 2025. The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed the disturbing details, revealing the mother’s initial complicity in silencing the assault.

The Night The Unthinkable Happened

Court proceedings revealed the chilling sequence of events. In December 2025, the mother left her boyfriend alone with her sleeping daughter in a bedroom. According to the NPAZ Bulletin, she returned an hour later to a scene of horror.

“Upon returning an hour later, she saw the offender naked with the victim.”

Confronted, the man immediately attempted to buy the mother’s silence. The prosecution stated his desperate offer was a key factor in the case.

“The offender apologised and promised to buy a bed for the mother in an attempt to silence her, leading to the initial concealment of the crime.”

This offer, likely worth several hundred US dollars (thousands of Rand), succeeded. The crime was buried, and the child’s ordeal was not reported.

Jealousy, Not Justice, Drives Report To Police

The rape remained a hidden secret until a twist of personal betrayal forced it into the open. The mother’s commitment to her lover fractured not over the assault on her child, but over his infidelity.

The NPAZ Bulletin states:

“The rape was only reported to police on the 24th of December 2025 after the mother had discovered that the offender was having a romantic relationship with another woman.”

This report, driven by jealousy, finally triggered a police investigation. The authorities moved swiftly, leading to the arrest and subsequent prosecution of the man.

NPAZ Vows To Pursue Child Abusers

In the wake of the sentencing, the NPAZ issued a stern warning. Their statement emphasised community responsibility in protecting the most vulnerable.

“The NPAZ reiterates its stance that pedophiles have no place in our society. Communities are urged to work together to protect children from deviant characters like the offender.”

The authority did not comment on any potential charges against the mother for her initial failure to report the crime. The child is now receiving specialist support.
