Fake China Shipping Deal Lands Two in Court Over US$27 540 Scam

Two people have been arrested for defrauding a Harare company of US$27 540 in a fake China shipping deal.

Wellington Mugodhi and Tapiwa Dhaura appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo yesterday facing fraud charges linked to a transaction worth US$27 540.

The pair were granted bail and are expected to return to court on March 3, pending the completion of investigations.

Promises of Fast Delivery

According to the State, the complainant — a company represented by Wellington Motsi — was approached in November 2025 by Mugodhi, who presented himself as a seasoned shipping agent capable of sourcing and importing goods from China.

Prosecutor Lawrence Gangarahwe told the court that Mugodhi’s claims convinced the company to enlist his services for the importation of electrical gadgets. On December 15, 2025, the complainant paid the full amount after being assured the goods would be delivered within 54 days.

Fake Proof of Payment Exposed

The court heard that Mugodhi claimed the supplier in China had already been paid and even furnished the complainant with what appeared to be proof of payment.

However, concerns arose when the complainant independently contacted the supplier and discovered that no payment had been made. Further checks revealed that the proof of payment was fraudulent.

When questioned, Mugodhi allegedly shifted blame to his co-accused, claiming he had handed over the money to Dhaura to finalise the transaction.

Police and CID Step In

After repeated follow-ups yielded only excuses, the complainant reported the matter to ZRP Harare Central on January 2, 2026. The case was referred the following day to the CID Commercial Crimes Division for further investigation.

On February 3, 2026, detectives received information leading to the arrest of both accused.

No Recovery Made

The State told the court that nothing has been recovered, with the full value of the allegedly defrauded goods standing at US$27 540.

Investigations are continuing as authorities seek to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud and the roles played by each accused.
