Itumeleng Khune Hails Brandon Petersen’s Rise as Kaizer Chiefs’ First-Choice Goalkeeper
Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has praised Brandon Petersen for stepping up as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, saying the shot-stopper has elevated his game and embraced the responsibility that comes with leading the team.
Speaking to iDiski Times, Khune expressed pride in Petersen’s development, highlighting his influence both on and off the pitch.
“Being a leader of the team comes with a huge responsibility and I’m happy that Brandon Petersen has taken his game to a whole different level. He’s been carrying the team and the players,” Khune said.
Stability Between the Sticks
For several seasons, Amakhosi struggled to establish consistency in goal, rotating between different custodians — including during the latter stages of Khune’s own career at Naturena.
However, Kaizer Chiefs appear to have found stability in Petersen, whose performances have helped solidify the team’s defensive structure. Under the guidance of coach Kaze and Ben Youssef, the club has shown visible improvement at the back.
“It’s very pleasing to see how the team has improved defensively. I’m happy to see Brandon inspiring the team to keep more clean sheets. Obviously that wouldn’t be possible without his defence, so I’m happy to see the improvement,” Khune noted.
National Team Credentials
Itu Khune believes Petersen’s form this season warrants recognition beyond club football. The former Chiefs captain has previously tipped the goalkeeper for Bafana Bafana selection and maintains that national team selectors should take note.
“He’s been very important throughout the season and I hope he continues with these performances so he can be called to Bafana, because right now he’s one of the best we have in the country,” Khune said.
