A new rugby talent has arrived, and he shares the famous Etzebeth name. Eben Etzebeth has dominated opponents across 141 Tests and counting. Therefore, rivals will not welcome another Etzebeth rising through the ranks. However, South African rugby supporters have reason to celebrate.
Introducing Christoff Etzebeth
Meet Christoff Etzebeth, a promising 20-year-old loosehead prop. He is the son of Eben’s cousin, Chris Etzebeth. Currently, he plays for Emeris, formerly known as Varsity College. Fans can watch him during the 2026 Varsity Cup season. The tournament kicked off on Monday, 16 February. Christoff started in the front row during Emeris’ 61-41 loss to UJ.
Before he scrums, the famous surname creates pressure. Christoff understands expectations linked to the Etzebeth legacy. “We all know Eben is one of the best rugby players in the world,” he told Netwerk24. Still, he focuses firmly on his own performance. He wants to represent the Etzebeth name with pride. “Sometimes it can put a bit of pressure on you, but I’m really proud of my last name. I don’t pay too much attention to the talk, though. I just want to go out and play my best rugby,” he added.
Following Legendary Footsteps
Like Eben, Christoff is contracted to the Sharks. He attended Boland Landbou in the Western Cape. Last season, he represented the Sharks U21 side. He is also part of the Sharks junior academy. Similarly, he begins his Varsity Cup journey at a young age. Eben played Varsity Cup rugby for Ikeys in 2011.
Eben remains Christoff’s biggest inspiration and motivation. “Eben is my biggest rugby hero,” “Seeing someone from your own family make it at that level gives you belief that you can do it too,” he added.
Family Support and Guidance
Eben actively supports Christoff’s rugby journey. “Eben and I talk before big matches and he gives me advice,” Christoff stated. “When I was still at school, he watched some of my games and sent me clips afterwards with feedback. He’s always willing to help and has never made me feel like I’m bothering him,” he concluded.
Despite a demanding Springbok schedule, Eben makes time for Christoff. On the field, he intimidates opponents with power and intensity. Off the field, he remains gentle, supportive, and deeply family-oriented.
