‘I’ve caught up with Razor’: All Blacks legend share Scott Robertson’s axing details

In mid-January, New Zealand Rugby delivered shocking news. Head coach Scott Robertson was abruptly dismissed after months of tension. Reports also suggested a player revolt within the squad.

Under Robertson, the All Blacks won 20 of 27 matches. That record delivered a strong 74 percent success rate. However, several surprise defeats raised serious concerns. Some critics questioned whether the champions were losing their aura.

Even so, terminating Robertson’s contract after only two years surprised many observers.

Marshall Reveals Brutal Dismissal

Fallout continues following the sudden coaching change. Robertson previously admitted he was “gutted by this outcome.” Now former All Blacks captain Justin Marshall has revealed more details.

“I’ve caught up with Razor, since what happened, all on that really bizarre day,” Marshall said on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast.

“Seeing him, probably about 10 days after that, was difficult. As we know, he wears his heart on his sleeve, Razor, and he cares about every team he coaches.

“And in particular, his biggest passion was to coach the All Blacks. So to have to be told on that day, like everybody else, you know…

“He got told at the same time as the story was unfolding – that he would no longer be the All Blacks coach – was something that took him massively by surprise. Because, obviously, he was getting told when the rest of the world was being told.

“He had no heads up and then there was no ability to, have any more conversations. The decision was made and taken out of his control.”

Marshall explained that Robertson learned the news alongside the public. Consequently, the decision shocked him and left no room for discussion.

Search Begins for Robertson’s Successor

Attention now turns to the future of the All Blacks. New Zealand Rugby has begun a careful search for a replacement. However, delays and mixed decisions have complicated the process.

Dave Rennie and Jamie Joseph remain leading candidates for the role.
