Senior Old Mutual Manager Convicted In Shocking Rape Case Involving Scholarship Student
A senior manager at financial services giant Old Mutual has been found guilty of raping a University of Zimbabwe student who was on the company’s scholarship programme. The court heard that the incidents occurred during separate encounters in November 2022 and June 2024. The accused, Musa Nyasha Dube Manyika, was convicted by a Harare magistrate after a full trial and is expected back in court for sentencing proceedings.
The conviction followed testimony that the complainant, a University of Zimbabwe student who was also an intern at the company, was sexually assaulted by the senior executive on two occasions. The incidents allegedly took place at the company’s offices and later inside a vehicle after a meeting about her career prospects.
Manyika was convicted by Harare regional magistrate Estere Chivasa, who ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Court Hears Details Of First Alleged Attack
The court heard that the first incident took place in November 2022 when the accused allegedly contacted the complainant via WhatsApp and asked her to assist him with work-related tasks.
According to court testimony presented by prosecutor Chido Gohori, the student was asked to help pack banners at the Old Mutual Gardens offices.
The prosecutor told the court that the accused collected the student from the University of Zimbabwe campus before driving to the office premises.
In court, the prosecution outlined what allegedly happened next:
“Upon arrival, the accused person took the complainant to his office where he raped her. After the act, he apologised and gave her a branded T-shirt, a juice bottle and a cap.”
The court also heard that the accused allegedly warned the student not to report the matter.
“He threatened the complainant not to disclose the matter to anyone as he would withdraw the scholarship from her.”
The complainant was reportedly a beneficiary of the Old Mutual scholarship programme at the time of the incident.
Second Alleged Incident Took Place In 2024
The prosecution told the court that a second incident occurred nearly two years later.
The court heard that on June 19, 2024, the accused allegedly contacted the complainant after working hours and asked to meet her to discuss her career prospects.
The two reportedly met at Ashbrittle Shops before leaving together in the accused’s vehicle.
Prosecutors told the court that instead of driving the complainant directly home, the accused changed direction along the route.
“Instead of stopping at the complainant’s gate, he drove into Belfast Road, turned immediately right and stopped.”
The prosecution said the accused then adjusted the passenger seat where the complainant was sitting before allegedly assaulting her again.
“He removed her trousers and raped her once again.”
The court heard that he later drove the complainant back to her home.
“Afterwards, he drove her to her residence and asked for forgiveness.”
Magistrate Finds State Proved Case Beyond Reasonable Doubt
After hearing the evidence presented during the trial, the court ruled in favour of the prosecution.
Magistrate Estere Chivasa found that the State had successfully established its case against the accused.
“The State managed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.”
Following the conviction, Manyika is expected to return to court for a pre-sentencing hearing.
The matter has attracted public attention since it first emerged in court proceedings, particularly because the complainant was participating in a scholarship programme linked to the company.
When the allegations first surfaced in court in 2024, the case also sparked widespread debate on social media about workplace power dynamics and mentorship relationships.
The trial has now concluded with the court delivering a guilty verdict.
