ZRP Boss Issues Stern Warning Ahead Of 2026 Easter And Independence Holidays
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba has issued a stern warning ahead of the 2026 Easter and Independence holidays, announcing intensified roadblocks, crackdowns on illegal taxis, and operations targeting unlicensed liquor outlets as authorities brace for increased nationwide travel.
In a press statement dated 25 March 2026, the police chief said law enforcement officers will be deployed countrywide to ensure peace and security during the Easter holiday period and the country’s 46th Independence celebrations.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), authorities expect increased travel, gatherings and public celebrations during the holidays.
“As the school first term concludes and the nation braces for the 2026 Easter and Independence Day celebrations, the Zimbabwe Republic Police stands ready to ensure that peace prevails throughout the country,” said Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba.
He added that police officers across provinces have been directed to implement comprehensive security arrangements.
“Accordingly, I have directed all Officers Commanding Police Provinces to put in place comprehensive security arrangements to ensure the safety and security of the public at gatherings at national, provincial and district levels.”

Roadblocks, Stop-And-Search Blitz Announced
The police chief warned motorists to expect increased law enforcement presence across the country.
“The ZRP will be on high alert and will conduct road blocks, stop and search blitz and patrols to maintain law and order throughout the holidays,” Mutamba said.
He also warned motorists against reckless driving and urged the public to use registered transport operators.
“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and comply with the country’s road rules and regulations. The public is encouraged to use roadworthy, registered and duly licensed public transport.”
The Commissioner-General also warned against using illegal transport operators commonly known as “mushikashika” (illegal pirate taxis).
“Members of the public are warned against boarding pirate taxis, commonly known as ‘mushikashika,’ as these expose commuters to risks such as road traffic accidents and robbery cases.”
Mutamba added that the National Highway Patrol, recently relaunched, will take strong action against reckless drivers.
Crackdown On Illegal Liquor Outlets And Crime
Police also announced a nationwide crackdown on illegal liquor outlets and crime hotspots during the holiday period.
“The operation of shebeens and unlicensed liquor outlets remains a matter of serious concern to the Police, as these often fuel violent crimes and public disorder.”
He said offenders will be arrested under the Liquor Act [Chapter 14:12].
“The Police will conduct targeted operations to shut down such establishments in terms of the Liquor Act [Chapter 14:12] and all offenders will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
The police chief also warned criminal gangs, especially armed robbers, that law enforcement will act decisively.
“Criminal syndicates especially armed robbery gangs targeting law enforcement officers, are warned that any attack on police officers or resistance to lawful arrest will face the appropriate response and lawful force.”
Public Urged To Remain Vigilant
Mutamba also urged Zimbabweans to safeguard their property and remain alert during the festive period.
“The public is also advised to remain vigilant against criminal activities such as unlawful entry and theft, robbery, murder and stock theft cases.”
He also encouraged citizens to report suspicious activity.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious criminal activities and indecorous behavior by our police officers to the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.”
The Commissioner-General concluded by urging citizens to celebrate responsibly.
“I urge all Zimbabweans to remain law abiding and responsible citizens during this period. Finally, I wish the nation and all visitors accident and crime free Easter and Independence holidays.”
