Benjani Mwaruwari Eyes Future Warriors Role but Admits He’s ‘Still Learning’

Benjani Mwaruwari has revealed his long-term ambition to coach Zimbabwe’s senior national team, but insists he is not yet ready to take on the high-pressure role.

The Highlanders coach, who is in his second stint in local football management, described himself as still developing in the profession despite his vast experience as a player at the highest level, including in the English Premier League.

All coaches wish to coach the national team but I’m still a baby in coaching,” he said.

Benjani Admits He Is Still Learning

Benjani Mwaruwari acknowledged that he is still in the early stages of his coaching journey, stressing that while leading the national team remains a personal ambition, he is focused on gaining experience and improving his craft before taking on such a responsibility.

He expressed confidence that, with time and growth, he will be ready to step into the role and contribute meaningfully as a capable coach for the senior national side.

I’m still learning, when the time is right, I wish I would do that and become a good coach for the national team.”

Centenary Clash Ends in Stalemate

Meanwhile, Highlanders marked their 100-year anniversary with a goalless exhibition match against the Zimbabwe national team at Barbourfields Stadium on Wednesday.

The encounter, organised as part of the club’s centenary celebrations, also served as preparation for the Warriors ahead of their participation in the upcoming Mukuru Four-Nation Tournament.

Despite the festive occasion, neither side managed to find the breakthrough in a tightly contested affair.

Positives in Build-Up Play

Mwaruwari took encouragement from his team’s composure on the ball, highlighting noticeable improvement in their ability to build from the back.

“We were very comfortable playing out from defence, and that’s something we’ve been working on,” he said. “In that area, I think we are becoming solid.”

The former Warriors captain believes this progress provides a strong foundation for further growth as the season unfolds.

Goal Drought Remains a Concern

However, the Highlanders coach acknowledged that his side continues to struggle in the attacking third — an issue that has plagued them in recent matches.

The stalemate against the national team follows two consecutive goalless draws in the league, leaving Bosso still searching for their first win of the campaign.

“We are creating chances, but we’re not finishing them,” Mwaruwari admitted. “That’s where we need to improve.”

Clean Sheets Offer Encouragement

While goals have been hard to come by, Highlanders have shown defensive resilience, keeping multiple clean sheets in recent outings.

Mwaruwari sees this as a positive sign, expressing confidence that once the attacking issues are resolved, the team will become more competitive.

Football is a process,” he said. “I’m happy with the clean sheets because they give us something to build on while we work on our finishing.”
